Matera is an atmospheric cave-town in southern Italy; a UNESCO site. The area of what is now Matera has been settled since the Palaeolithic period. The city was allegedly founded by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. Walking around it gives one a sense of what life must have been like living in a cave. The hills within the town are honeycombed with small caves - an interesting and eerie feeling. We just wish we had a digital camera at that time as many of the scanned prints lacked solid detail.
